Get Outdoors is a great summer theme. Pick a new spot each week that you haven't been and explore. Pack a picnic lunch to take along and remember these green picnic tips to save time, money, and mother earth for National Picnic Month.
GREEN PICNIC TIPS
Pick a spot under a big tree or covered area. The heat won't exhaust you as fast and your skin won't burn as easy.
You may want to have non-toxic sunscreen and bug repellent with you.
Bring a large blanket or towels to lay out. I think it's fun to eat on the lawn and easier when the kids are little. I have a water-resistant outdoor blanket that comes everywhere with me.
Buy local foods for your meal. Put together sandwiches or other 'cool' foods to bring along. Try these fruit kabobs. Finger foods are easy and fun!
Fill up insulated reusable water bottles with cold water to stay hydrated.
Use lightweight reusable plates and silverware. If this isn't possible look for some that are compostable when you dispose of them. Our sandwich & snack bags, ecobaguettes, cloth napkins, nonpaper towels, straws, and market bags are the perfect items to use on your picnic.
Relax and read a book or magazine you've been meaning to catch up on.
Take the opportunity to teach the kids about what is nearby. Birds, flowers, plants. Have them collect leaves, pinecones, and other items they see.
Pick up your litter when you leave. Recycle/compost what you can. If your park doesn't have these designated containers bring home for your weekly collection or to somewhere that does recycle.
